The new 2022 Volkswagen Golf R will start at $44,995 while the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI will start at $31,495. Both cars feature an impressive list of improvements that make them stand out even more by offering better performance, better handling, better cornering, and a more luxurious interior.
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R and Golf GTI aren’t just more powerful, they are also designed to handle better. A new Vehicle Dynamics Manager improves handling on both cars while the GTI gets a VAQ torque-sensing limited-slip differential in order to better transfer power to the road. The Golf R gets an improved 4Motion all-wheel drive system designed to better balance the vehicle, specifically through the rear axle torque-vectoring system that can transfer up to 100% of the available rear torque to an individual wheel. Yes, this means that in essence, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R has a “drift” mode.
A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder powers both models with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque in the Golf GTI; and 315 horsepower with 295 pound-feet of torque in the Golf R. With the six-speed manual in the R, torque is rated at 280 pound-feet which is still plenty.
Both cars gain a much more luxurious interior as well. The GTI features an available golf-ball shifter and tartan seats while both offer 30 ambient lighting options inside. A new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is standard and a heads-up display is available.
