Meet the ID. Tiguan, Volkswagen’s Electric Successor to the ID.4

Volkswagen has a new name for its mid-size electric SUV. The ID. Tiguan is the all-electric model that Volkswagen plans as the successor to the ID.4. Its European launch is set for early 2027.

The ID.4 laid a strong foundation as one of Volkswagen’s most successful electric vehicles. The ID. Tiguan builds on that success with a new body, a new interior and a name borrowed from Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide. Here is a friendly introduction to the next chapter of Volkswagen’s electric SUV story.

From ID.4 to ID. Tiguan

The ID. Tiguan sits on MEB+, the next step of Volkswagen’s dedicated electric platform. It is built in Emden, Germany. In Europe, it will share showrooms with the gas-powered Tiguan from Wolfsburg, giving Volkswagen two Tiguan models side by side.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer calls the ID. Tiguan a new benchmark for the brand’s electric SUVs built in Germany. He points to three strengths: a clean and confident design, easy-to-use controls and up to 600 km of range made possible by the MEB+ platform.

A Bolder Shape on the Outside

If you know the ID.4, the ID. Tiguan will look like a big step forward. Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language swaps the softer crossover lines of the ID.4 for a more powerful SUV stance. Precise lines and tightly sculpted surfaces give the body a solid, premium appearance, and Volkswagen says the result looks like a vehicle from the next class up.

The door handles change too. The ID. Tiguan brings back classic pull-style handles, a familiar design that is simple to use.

A Cockpit Rebuilt From the Ground Up

The biggest changes for ID.4 fans are inside. Volkswagen listened to customer requests and brought back physical buttons for important functions.

The climate system now runs on a button bar in the centre console. Audio volume and track or station changes use a controller in the centre console. The multifunction steering wheel uses physical buttons as well, and the power window switches in the driver’s door have a new layout. Even the inside door openers have been reshaped to sit comfortably in the hand.

The screens are new across the board. A 10-inch digital cockpit sits behind the steering wheel, and a 15-inch infotainment screen sits in the centre of the dash. An available 12-inch co-driver display is a first for a European Volkswagen. The passenger can use it for infotainment, information or games, and a privacy mode keeps it hidden from the driver. Sound can play through the passenger’s paired Bluetooth headphones.

There is a playful touch too. New “Retro” displays can recreate the blue and red gauges of the Golf IV in the digital cockpit.

Driving Tech That Takes Some Work Off Your Plate

One-pedal driving comes standard on the ID. Tiguan. The driver can slow the SUV strongly just by lifting off the accelerator pedal, which keeps city driving smooth and simple.

The available Connected Travel Assist goes further. It can help with lane changes on highways, and it can automatically stop the ID. Tiguan at red traffic lights. Like all driver assistance systems, it works within system limits, and the driver remains responsible at all times.

The available Digital Key turns a compatible smartphone into a key that can lock, unlock and start the SUV. Owners can share it with family, friends or coworkers through the Volkswagen app by text message, messenger or email.

Range, Power and Towing

Volkswagen announced three versions of the ID. Tiguan:

  • Rear-wheel drive with 140 kW (188 hp) and a 58 kWh battery
  • Rear-wheel drive with 210 kW (282 hp) and a 77 kWh battery
  • 4MOTION all-wheel drive with 220 kW (295 hp) and a 77 kWh battery
  • Up to 600 km of range on the European WLTP test cycle, depending on version
  • Towing up to 3,968 lbs (1,800 kg) with the 58 kWh battery, and up to 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) with the 77 kWh battery

In Europe, the ID. Tiguan will come in four equipment levels.

Space for Daily Life

The ID. Tiguan seats five people comfortably. Behind the rear seats, the cargo area offers up to 534 L of space. Up front, a 32 L frunk adds a handy spot for charging cables or smaller items.

The available PowerSocket adapter plugs into the charging port and lets the ID. Tiguan power outside devices, from an electric grill to an e-bike. Two available Qi2 wireless charging pads with magnetic rings hold compatible phones securely in place.

Comfort options include power front seats with massage, memory and ventilation, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic sunroof.
