Guelph Volkswagen
359 Woodlawn Rd W, Guelph, ON, N1H 7K9The 2026 Volkswagen Golf lineup offers two very different approaches to performance in the same compact hatchback body. The Golf GTI delivers 241 hp, front-wheel drive, and two trim levels designed around everyday agility and driver engagement. The Golf R pushes further: 328 hp, 4MOTION All-Wheel Drive with a rear-axle torque vectoring differential, and a single-minded focus on maximum performance in a practical package. Same wheelbase. Same five-door hatchback. Different vehicles entirely.
Choosing between them is a decision about how much performance you want, which features matter most, and how you plan to use the car day-to-day. This breakdown covers both Golf models trim-by-trim so you can land on the right configuration with confidence.
Both GTI trims run the EA888 evo4 2.0 L 4-cylinder TSI engine producing 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. A VAQ limited-slip differential channels power through the front wheels. Fuel economy is rated at 8.8 L/100 km combined. Cargo space with the rear seats folded comes to 977 L.
The base GTI is a thoroughly equipped performance hatchback. Standard features include 18" Jerez machined alloy wheels with all-season tires, a freestanding 12.9" touchscreen, 10.25" Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro, satellite navigation, Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a Harman Kardon-adjacent audio baseline, wireless App-Connect, and Adaptive Front Lighting System. The interior features cloth seating with Carbon Grey décor, brushed stainless steel pedals, a heated sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, and interior ambient lighting customizable in up to 30 colours.
Travel Assist — combining Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist — is standard. Optional packages at this trim include 19" Queenstown alloy wheels with summer performance tires, a Rail 2 Rail power sunroof, and an Artvelour seating upgrade.
GTI key highlights:
The Autobahn trim steps up the interior and adds driver-focused chassis technology. Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive damping with Driving Profile Selection becomes standard, along with progressive steering — both absent from the base GTI. A Rail 2 Rail power sunroof, 19" Queenstown machined alloy wheels with summer performance tires, Park Assist, Head-Up Display, Harman Kardon Premium Audio System (8 speakers plus subwoofer), three-zone Climatronic climate control with rear temperature controls, heated front and outer rear seats, and Light Assist automatic high-beam control are all standard at this trim.
Artvelour seating surfaces (derived from the European GTI Clubsport) are standard on the Autobahn. An optional leather seating package adds ventilated front seats, a power driver seat with memory, and power recline for the passenger.
GTI Autobahn key highlights:
The Golf R uses the same EA888 evo4 2.0 L 4-cylinder TSI engine as the GTI, but in a significantly higher state of tune: 328 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque — 87 hp more than the GTI. The 7-speed DSG is the sole transmission, paired with 4MOTION All-Wheel Drive featuring a rear-axle torque vectoring differential that actively distributes torque between the rear wheels for sharper cornering. Fuel economy is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined. Cargo space with rear seats folded is 977 L.
Standard equipment on the Golf R is comprehensive: Nappa leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated front and outer rear seats, power driver seat with memory, 12.9" touchscreen, 10.25" Digital Cockpit Pro, satellite navigation, Harman Kardon Premium Audio System (8 speakers plus subwoofer), Head-Up Display, three-zone electronic climate control with rear controls, Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors and Park Assist, 19" Warmenau forged alloy wheels with summer performance tires, and a leather sport steering wheel with "R" button and paddle shifters.
Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive damping with Driving Profile Selection is standard, along with an XDS electronic differential lock. The R-Performance Package adds Drift and Special driving modes for drivers who want the full range of dynamic options.
The standard Golf R represents the complete package as described above. The only available option is a Rail 2 Rail power sunroof.
The Black Edition adds a distinct visual identity without changing the mechanical specification. Exterior additions include blacked-out styling elements across the front and rear logos, "Black Edition" badging, 19" Warmenau gloss black forged alloy wheels, black-painted brake calipers with "R" logo, black exhaust tips, and a standard Rail 2 Rail power sunroof. Carbon fibre decorative inserts replace the standard interior trim.
For drivers who want to reduce kerb weight, the Black Edition offers an optional Akrapovič titanium exhaust system, which also enhances exhaust acoustics. A no-charge cloth seating package is available for those who prefer it over the standard Nappa leather.

The GTI is the better fit for drivers who want a sharp, fun, front-wheel drive hatchback for everyday use. The base GTI handles city traffic and back roads with equal ease; the Autobahn adds the DCC adaptive suspension and premium audio for drivers who want a more complete package.
The Golf R is for drivers who want no compromises on performance. The 87 hp advantage over the GTI, the 4MOTION AWD with rear-axle torque vectoring, and the Nappa leather interior place it in a different performance category. The Black Edition is for those who want that capability wrapped in a visually distinct exterior.
